Faster Boot Up Speed
I get emails all the time from frustrated users asking how they can get a computer to boot up faster, some people even complain that their computer is taking up to 10 minutes before they can actually do anything!
Now 10 minutes is an absolutely crazy amount of time for your computer to start up, so here are some tips you can try that will speed up the boot of your PC;
Boot Defragment
Boot Defragment essentially is the process where all your boot files are placed next to each other on the disk drive to allow for faster booting. To enable the boot defrag you have to perform this edit;
- Open your regedit (start - run - Regedit)
- Navigate to - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction
- Double click on enable
- Make sure the value data is set to Y
- Click OK
- Boot defrag will start on your next reboot
Disable Unwanted Programs
Whenever you boot your PC a bunch of useless programs may also start, all these do is simply slow down your boot. You should go through the list of all these programs and remove them from the boot process, to do this just;
- Open msconfig (start - run - msconfig)
- Click the startup tab
- Go through this list and uncheck all the unwanted programs (note - this will not uninstall them, just stop them starting at boot)
- Click apply
Run a Registry Repair
Over time your registry can become so cluttered with junk that it will slow down every aspect of your PC, you should often run a registry repair scan to clean up your registry. To run a registry scan do this;
- Run the scan here
- The software will do all the work for you
Remove all Spyware/Virus's
Virus's, spyware, malware, adware and other computer nasties can dramatically slow down your computers performance, including your boot up process. You should run a scan immediately and remove any of these right away, to do this just;
- Run the scan here
- The software will automatically scan your computer and remove any threats
